An engagement ring is usually a solitaire ring, though it may also be adorned with additional small stones. It can be new, but an old family heirloom can also be fantastically beautiful and stylish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An engagement ring can be made of gold or silver and may be adorned with crystals or gemstones. The most elegant pieces are the fairytale-like diamond engagement rings, but if you don\u2019t have a fabulously wealthy prince riding in on a real white horse, then unfortunately you\u2019ll have to do without one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where should you wear your engagement ring? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the previous definition of a wedding ring, you may already have realised that wearing a wedding ring is a highly complex matter involving many factors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you were proposed to with a gemstone engagement ring, you should wear it on the fourth finger \u2013 the ring finger \u2013 of your left hand. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, the groom does not wear a ring until the wedding. At the wedding, you will each put a different ring on the other\u2019s finger \u2013 this is the wedding ring. It is customary to wear the wedding ring on the fourth finger of the right hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t necessarily have to wear an engagement ring alongside your wedding ring, but you can if you like. In that case, the engagement ring is worn on your right hand, next to your wedding ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origins of the custom of wearing wedding rings \u2013 which is still familiar today and remains more or less in practice \u2013 date back as far as the early 19th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 17th century, it was still customary to give engagement gifts such as an engagement shawl. In the 19th century, these were gradually replaced by engagement rings<\/strong><\/em>. By the 20th century, girls were already being given gift rings<\/em><\/strong> served as tokens of love. The rings given as gifts were typically made of silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gift rings<\/strong> They were very popular in the 20th century. It was not uncommon for a girl to wear several at once, having received tokens of love from several men. You can\u2019t just cling rigidly to traditions from long ago; it\u2019s a different world now. Nowadays, nobody expects anyone to wear their wedding ring according to strict rules, clinging to the customs that were in force in our grandmothers\u2019 day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jewellers usually recommend that couples wear their rings in whatever way is comfortable for them and suits their taste.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of this, it is worth being aware of how the custom of wearing a wedding ring has evolved and developed over the centuries. It is also worth bearing in mind that if you are aware of the traditional ways in which a wedding ring should be worn, it will be easier for you to decide whether you like this style, or whether you would prefer to wear this symbol of love \u2013 the wedding ring \u2013 in a different way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
